Montalto di Castro. City gate and fountain of three pipes

Montalto di Castro. City gate and fountain of three pipes

The medieval village of Montalto di Castro is surrounded by defensive walls, and to access it you cross the ancient gateway to the village.

The space in front of the gate has a parking lot where you can leave your car to begin a walking tour of the historic center.

The fountain of three pipes - fontana delle tre cannelle of Montalto di Castro was built in 1775, following the construction of the aqueduct that carried water into the city from the Spring of the Tuff of Campomorto.

The fountain is located a short distance from the central square of the city, in which you can admire the castle and the church of Santa Croce.

The structure is a trapezoidal bath, built in travertine, with six pillars and three steps in front.

The facade of the fountain is topped by three spires with spheres.

In addition to the channels from which the water comes out and gives it its name, it is also possible to observe the coat of arms of the city and the inscription that recalls the origin of the fountain.
