Cori had 3 gates that took their name from the town to which the road was directed: Porta Ninfina towards Ninfa, Porta Signina towards Segni and Porta Romana towards Rome.
All the gates were of the 'idiot' (sea) type, that is, they had a crooked opening that forced any enemies to enter with their right sides uncovered and not protected by the shield.
The three gates have been destroyed but Porta Ninfina, originally from the 6th century BC, was rebuilt in 1984 on the occasion of the historic Carosello dei rioni.
The three gates give the name to the districts of Cori that vie for the palio during the historical re-enactments.
