Fabrica di Roma. Farnese Castle

Farnese castle dominates the centre of the town of Fabrica di Roma and the first structure was from the eleventh century.

At that time an urban core was formed around the fortress that was donated to the powerful abbey of Farfa.

It is built on a solid rock outcrop still visible on the western side of the fortress.

The fortress was established by 1177 when the Abbey of Castel Sant'Elia assigned it to the Prefects of Vico.

The real work of transformation and beautification was done by the Farnese in the period in which it belonged to the Duchy of Castro.

It was Cardinal Alessandro Farnese who turned it into a residence in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and of the medieval core only the tower, among the highest of Lazio, and part of the internal ramps of the courtyard, remain visible.
