Nepi. Borgia Fortress

The majestic Borgia fortress of Nepi was built in 1450 by Cardinal Rodrigo Borgia, the future Alexander VI Pope.

It was built on an old medieval castle and is situated at the confluence of the two rivers Rio Falisco and Rio Puzzolo.

It was renovated to turn it into a residential building when the territory of Nepi was entrusted to the family by Alfonso Borgia, Pope Callisto III.

The fortress was donated by Rodrigo to his daughter Lucrezia Borgia.

Then the fiefdom passed under the dominion of the Farnese family who expanded the walls with the architect Antonio da Sangallo the Younger.

What remains of the structure include the two towers, the ruins of the two buildings and four ramparts.

Inside we can admire on the north side the beautiful noble hall of Renaissance style.

In one of the cellars of the castle was found a stretch of paved Roman road and three gates of the city are visible, of which the oldest is dated III-II century BC.
