Ronciglione. Fountain of Liocorni

Ronciglione. Fountain of Liocorni

The fountain of Liocorni in Ronciglione is attributed to Vignola, the architect preferred by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese although in reality it was commissioned by Cardinal Antonio Gentili from Faenza.

It was built of sandstone in 1566 and is decorated with the Farnese lilies and unicorns.

The water comes directly from the mouths of the unicorns. Around the fountain, they were sculptures of legends like that of the gold reins of sea horses that were stolen by the French in 1799.
