Soriano nel Cimino. Fountain Papacqua

The fountain Papacqua of Soriano nel Cimino is by Vignola who built it at the behest of Cardinal Madruzzo in the sixteenth century to beautify the terrace when you open the front door of the palace.

It consists of bas-reliefs carved into the rock with a number of representations such as Moses with a staff that lets the water gush from a rock to quench thethirst of the Jews.

Another one is a giant female figure holding tight to three little children to protect them from a satyr; and a shepherd with his flock that plays next to the god Pan.

The water is then conveyed into a decorated long rectangular tank and flows downstream to a pond.

The palace was rebuilt in the early eighteenth century by Cardinal Annibale Albani, who created the garden next to the fountain Papacqua.
