Frascati. Lancellotti Villa

Villa Lancellotti in Frascati was born to accommodate the brothers of San Filippo Neri the house had simple and small dimensions.

Transformed into a beautiful villa during changes of ownership: first in the hands of bankers and then in 1866 it became the property of Elisabetta Borghese Aldobrandini, wife of Prince Filippo Massimo Lancellotti.

The residence became a productive organism surrounded by vineyards, so much so that in 1591 it was defined as magna domus.

The symmetrical expansion of the wings respected the original architectural model, between 1617 and 1619 the nymphaeum was built following the model of the water theater of Villa Mondragone.

The facade was restructured in 1764 with the addition of a two-flight staircase. The last phase of the works, under the Lancellottis, concerned the internal paintings and enriched the villa with the construction of a panoramic terrace overlooking Rome.

Inside, the vault of the hall on the ground floor is decorated with frescoes from 1873 by Angelini and Forti, celebrating the Lancellotti family. in other rooms it is possible to admire the works of Cherubino Alberti such as Elia kidnapped in heaven on the chariot of fire and Abacuc transported in flight by an angel. In the vault of the eighteenth-century dressing room, the fresco Diana with sleeping Edimione among four small landscapes is preserved.

The bombings of the great conflict damaged the structure, which has recently undergone restoration. A part of the garden has now become a municipal garden, the so-called Parco dell'Ombrellino.
