Contigliano. Gate of the saints

Gate of the saints was once one of the main entrances to town of Contigliano, when it was a fortified village. Today it has been incorporated into a Renaissance-style palace.

The gate is at the end of a steep climb and has lost its defensive character to assume the ornamental one.

Above the door is the marble crest of the town of Contigliano: five hills to which was then added the rose of the Orsini family who ruled the area for years.
