Legend has it that the first building of Guglielmi castle in Montalto di Castro was constructed in the eighth century by Desiderio, the Duke of Tuscia, then king of the Lombards. The castle consists of a central medieval building and two lower wings added at later dates.
The original nucleus was made up by the imposing square tower with ‘basemento a scarpa’ reinforcement that seems built leaning against the walls, and for this it has a distinctive curved tendency.
The present castle was built in the fifteenth century by the Orsini, as reflected by a plaque on the tower, at which time Renaissance windows were opened in the fortified walls.
Subsequently it underwent several renovations. In the late eighteenth century it was raised by one floor and in the last century were added the loggia and the current battlements.
Guglielmi castle dominates the city of Montalto di Castro with its massive features.
