Jenne. Church of the Madonna of the Fortress

The church of the Madonna of the Fortress was born from the modernization and expansion of the church of St Mary in Arce, the original chapel of the fortress of Jenne.

The church is all in stone with a small bell tower on one of the long sides next to the original entrance which had a door with a stone frame and an ancient lunette where the original frescoes cannot be recognized.

The building has two floors adapting to the slope of the land and a later expansion can be recognized. The new entrance to the church takes place through a staircase from the garden of the fortress.

Its interior is a single room and on the back wall of the ancient body you can admire some remains of 12th-century frescoes, while among the works there is a 16th-century terracotta portraying the Madonna.
