The first nucleus of the current historic center of Jenne is represented by a fortress built on the highest point of the village around the year one thousand. Its position was strategic for the protection of the nearby monastery of Subiaco during the Middle Ages. Indeed, its government was often the direct emanation of the abbots of the monastery until its decline in the late Middle Ages.
In 1199, Pope Alexander IV was born in the fortress from the family of Philip II of Marano, who for a short time had the government of the castle of Jenne.
Today only traces of some masonry remain of the ancient fortress while on the fortress you can admire the church of St Mary born from the expansion of the castle church.
