Colleferro. Old Castle

The castle is the symbol of Colleferro and its arches are found in the emblem of the town and in the majestic entrance of the Church of Santa Barbara.

Its origins date back to the XI and XII century and was built by the Duke of Segni to control via Latina in the Sacco Valley.

Probably the area began to be inhabited from the eighth century, as shown by a recent archaeological dig.

It always had defensive origins and we have news in a document of 1318 in which the castle was assigned to Giovanni Conti di Segni.

From another document in 1363 concerning the taxes it follows that in those years the castle had a population of 1,600 inhabitants rapidly diminishing.

The castle was destroyed in 1431 by troops of a soldier of fortune, Giacomo Caldora, as were many other buildings in the area, during the war between Pope Eugenius IV and Queen Joanna of Naples. Today the castle is privately held.
