Tivoli. Pia Fortress (Rocca Pia)

Pia Fortress or Rocca Pia is in the center of Tivoli and was built by Pope Pius II in 1461.

It is on a hill to control the city from above and to prevent any popular uprisings.

The fortress has a square structure with four circular towers of different heights and is accessed through a drawbridge.

The highest reaches 36.50 meters and is located near the Roman amphitheatre of the II century A.D., the amphitheatre of Bleso.

Until 1960 it was used as a prison.
