Piglio. Torre del Piano

Piglio. Torre del Piano

Torre del Piano is situated in Vico of Piglio, in a strategic point for the crossing of several roads on the border between Piglio, Anagni and Acuto.

The building dates back to 1080, has a square base and is about thirty meters high. At the base there is also a small chapel contemporaneous with the tower.

It is adorned with battlements which rise on top of the fort, with four surrounding turrets entirely of stone.

In ancient times, it served as a link in the chain of towers scattered in Ciociaria signalling the arrival of enemy troops.

The military origin is testified by loopholes (slits), still visible, where the guards of the tower would jut up arms to defend it from enemy attacks.
