Cantalupo in Sabina. Porta Maggiore - greater gate

Greater gate (Porta Maggiore) is known also as Porta Dell’ Orologio (Clock Gate), is the main entrabce to the town of Cantalupo in Sabina.

On the door are two statues dedicated to Mercury, on the left, and Minerva, on the right, commonly known as "Bammocci" (boys).

The two statues of the sixteenth century, each 1.2 m high, are a symbol of the city and are made of white marble. The statue of the goddess Minerva is missing its head.

According to legend, the 'Cantalupari' (people of Cantalupo) were asked to choose between water and the 'bammocci' and they preferred the latter.

For this strong link with the two statues, jokingly, the Cantalupari are also nicknamed "Bammocciari".
