This small processional cross of Posta is today in the Civic Museum of Rieti. It comes from the church of San Francesco, is painted in tempera on a gold background and is attributed to the Master of Fossa.
On the back of the cross stands the figure of the "dying Christ Crucified" with Madonna, while at the front the figure of the "Dead Christ Crucified" with St. Francis of Assisi and another saint.
This work is a refined product of elegant craftsmanship: among the finest works of the Master of Fossa. The master of Fossa had grown up in the workshop of Maestro di Cesi, who welcomed the best Umbrian painters of the 1300s.
The cross of Posta documents an important phase of the renovated Franciscan cult pursuing the ideal of apostolic poverty contrasted by the rich and powerful Church.
In 1329, Pope John XXII condemned the thesis of pauperism movement.
