The monastery of Saint George in Riofreddo was one of the first Benedictine monastic communities born after the fall of the Roman Empire in the eighth century. For some time it was among the largest in this area on the border between Lazio and Abruzzo regions where important commercial routes passed through which the wool trade passed.
The monastery was located along the ancient Valeria Road near a Roman arch bridge which takes its name from the community. The old roman Saint George bridge is located along the ancient Tiburtina Valeria road and was built by the emperor Nerva in 97 AD. and crossed the Bagnatore ditch, once called Acqua Frigida (Rio freddo).
Today the monastery is in ruins and only the skyline of the building and the bell tower can be recognized. Some of its decorations have been moved like the altar which is now in the church of Saint Nicholas.
