The church of St. Nicholas is located at the highest point of the village of Riofreddo, just outside the walls of the castle of Colonna-Pelegalli.
Its origins date back to the Middle Ages and the last renovation dates back to 1771 when it took on its current form with a facade with simple shapes that ends with a tympanum. The facade is covered in plaster and graced by a door with a Baroque line and a bell tower with three orders. The bell tower ends with a clock that marked the time of the village.
The interior of the church of St. Nicholas is in neoclassical style with a single nave covered with a barrel vault. On the sides of the nave there are niches and chapels with altars.
Next to the church was the ancient oratory of Saint Rock which today has become the oratory of Saint Lucia, a small room with an altar from the ancient medieval church and a fresco of the saint.
Worth mentioning is the famous Canto della Pastorella which takes place in this church on the evening of 24 December when people dressed in the traditional way enter the church carrying gifts and the songs are accompanied by the sound of the bagpipe.
