Ischia di Castro was one of the first estates of the Farnese family in the fourteenth century when they built the palace.
The building was commissioned to the architect Antonio da Sangallo the younger man who was to restructure the original castle of the eleventh century. The idea was to turn a defensive castle into an elegant Renaissance palace.
The medieval drawbridge was turned into a gateway to the historic centre and the central tower was filled to support the thrust of the new structure on the right.
The building, however, remained unfinished and you can recognize the different stages of the castle construction.
The newest part is elevated, as well as the structures that are added to the original core.
In the fourteenth century strengthening of the fortification was also initiated.
