Rocca Santo Stefano. Rocca Santo Stefano Castle

The Rocca Santo Stefano Castle dates back to the end of the millennium when some families sought refuge from the oppression of the lords of Bellegra and the Saracen invaders in a fortress in a dominant position.

The initial name of the village was Rocca d'Equi in honor of the ancient population, while the castle does not have a real name because the town did not have feudal families who inhabited it. In fact, Rocca Santo Stefano immediately became part of the defensive system of the nearby Abbey of Subiaco with which it shares its entire history.

The village then formed around the fortress, while the castle chapel was transformed into the current church of Santa Maria Assunta.
Of the entire initial fortress, today only a square tower and a complex of about 20 large rooms remain of the castle which can be accessed from an alley in the historic center. A few years ago the castle was donated by the church to the municipality of Rocca Santo Stefano which is proceeding with its arrangement.
