Romana gate in Fumone faces Rome and is protected from the outside by a square tower.
In the past it was the only access to the fortress and was probably equipped with a drawbridge (which seems to remain a memory in the nearby Via del Ponte), iron shutters, double doors and machicolations.
Walkways in stone and wood allowed the soldiers to lean out of the walls and throw stones and arrows at the enemies who had arrived right under the walls.
On the outside of the door you can see a coat of arms, perhaps from the 12th century, which seems to represent a crenellated castle on a red background and two white transverse bands.
On the inside, a mural painting was found depicting a Madonna and Child vigorously wriggling in the arms of the Virgin.
