Palombara Sabina. Savelli Torlonia Castle

In the old town of Palombara Sabina lies the Savelli Torlonia. The medieval castle is built on the highest point of the town and the first reports date back to the register of the Abbey of Subiaco who mentioned it in 1064.

The first original nucleus, a square, is the work of Ottaviani. It was in this castle that the anti-pope Innocent III was arrested in 1180.

Between the twelfth and fourteenth century it was expanded around the original medieval tower that still characterizes the village of Palombara.

In the fourteenth century, the castle became the seat of a tribunal established by the Templars.

The castle houses a nature museum and a permanent exhibition of Roman marble sculptures, including a female figure representing Eirene (personification of Peace), copy of the work of Greek sculptor Kephisodotos.
