La Portella or Small Gate of Sonnino
La Portella or Small Gate of Sonnino

Sonnino. La Portella or Small Gate

Originally Sonnino had 5 gates: Portella, San Pietro – St Peter gate, San Giovanni – St John gate, Tocco gate and Riore gate. The main one was St Peter gate through which the Via Volsca entered, the real access road to the town, then replaced by Riore gate. Of some gates there is no trace following the destruction of the town commissioned by Pius VII in 1819.

La Portella was used by the lords of the castle because it leads to the town centre and to the church of St Angel and on the portico of the church you can still see the stone anconi (bracket that is used to carry the upper elements of a cornice).
