The castle of Sonnino sits on the top of the town and dates to the 9th century and had a defensive role with a tall cylindrical tower over 30 meters high surrounded by perimeter walls. The castle was part of a vast lookout system. Today the main tower is still on the top and has 4 levels which can be accessed via steep steps.
Inside the castle there are basements with prisons, ovens and cisterns (wells) that ensured survival in the event of a siege. Recesses, trapdoors and torture tools are also visible.
In the following centuries the castle expanded and became the residence of the lord, of which today only the perimeter structures and the frescoed rooms of the palace, where the De Sonninos lived, can be seen.
