Subiaco. Bridge on the River Aniene

Subiaco. Bridge on the River Aniene

The medieval bridge of Saint Francis is set in the medieval village of Subiaco and crosses the River Aniene.

It is made of ocher-colored stone and has a structure with an arch which extends for 37 meters in length and 20 in height and is equipped with a high quadrangular control tower.

It was built in 1356 following a battle between factions of Subiaco and the Tiburtini.

The bridge was constructed by Abbot Adhemar with the ransom funds paid by the Tiburtini for the release of its prisoners.
