Ronciglione. The Fortress

‘La Rocca’ - The Fortress of Ronciglione has large corner towers that mark its impressive size.

It was built in the Middle Ages by the Vico Prefects to guard the only natural access to the city.

Under Della Rovere family, the fortress underwent major changes and in 1475 Pope Sixtus IV entrusted the work to the architect Giovanni Dolci who added the circular tower and the four fortified towers at the corners.

From this asset comes the popular name "I Torrioni" (The Big Towers).

Popes Sixtus IV and Paul III have stayed here. Unfortunately, in 1756 it passed to the Genoese Jerome Marè who left the fortress in a state of neglect.
