The fortress of Cittareale is a masterpiece of military architecture and its function was defence of the territory.
Cittareale was a strategic fort given its location on the border between the Kingdom of Two Sicilies and the Papal State.
Over the centuries the fortress has suffered several modifications to adapt it to new weapons such as gunpowder.
In the particular form it presents itself to the public today, the fortress is the one rebuilt by the Aragonese in 1479.
