Vallepietra. Caetani Tower

The village of Vallepietra was formed around a castle of which today the great Caetani Tower - Torre Caetani remains, right in the main square of the village, the access gates and some sections of the walls. The ancient castle, later transformed into a palace in the Renaissance, was then destroyed during the terrible Marsica earthquake of 1915.

Its name takes up that of the important Caetani family - which gave birth to Pope Boniface VIII - and which during the Middle Ages was among the most important in Europe. The Caetanis settled the castle and governed Vallepietra in a period between 1267 and 1670.

The tower has a square base and a height of about 24 meters and from its top you can enjoy a view over the whole Aniene Valley and the Simbruini Mountains chain. At its base a fountain was built which supplied water to the village.
