Episcopal Palace

Veroli. Episcopal Palace

The presence of the Bishop in Veroli seems to have begun in the fifth century.

The first official documents date back to the eighth century, so a Bishop's Palace or Episcopal Palace had to be present within the heart of Veroli.

Certainly, two popes stayed there in the Middle Ages, Lucius III in 1182 and Alexander IV in 1257.

In the sixteenth century the bishop-cardinal Enmo Filonardi renovated and enlarged the old palace.

In the seventeenth century, Bishop Lanteri built representative rooms such as the Sala del trono, the Saletta dei Comuni, the Bisleti Hall and the Sala Rossa.

The Hall of the Throne or of the Medallions holds the images of the bishops over the years and for the splendid frescoed views of Veroli.

In this building there is the bishop's archive which also contains a collection of parchments from the 16th century.
