Roman Gate

Veroli. Roman Gate

Porta Romana or Roman gate is one of the most important and monumental accesses to Veroli.

It takes its name from the fact that it looks towards the eternal city. In the past it was also called Porta Arenaria because it was near sandstone quarries.

The current gate was built by architect Giuseppe Subleyras in 1782, enlarging the medieval gate to allow easier passage to vehicles.

A portal in white travertine that ends with a frieze opens into a brick wall that has an elegant string course and a white travertine finish.

On the frieze is written S.P.Q.V. - Senatus Populus Que Verolanus which recalls the important role played by Veroli in Roman times.

In the square in front of this door the executions of the condemned were carried out.
