Priverno. Villa Gallio

Priverno. Villa Gallio

The villa Gallio of Priverno was the residence of Cardinal Bartolomeo Gallio who was Secretary of State of Pope Gregory XIII.

Bartholomew was born in Como and has built several villas including the most famous being the Villa d'Este in Cernobbio on Lake Como.

In another of his buildings, the Gallio Palace in Gravedona, was held the famous Council of Trent to make peace bteween the Catholic Church and Protestant Church.

Villa Gallio in Priverno is also called Castle of San Martino, because it was erected on the ancient church of San Martino and is shaped like a castle with a square form with four towers at the top.

Today the villa is home to the Museum of Mathematics and in its park are held conferences and events.

A plaque shows that Pope Sixtus V lived here during his trip to check reclamation works in the nearby plain of Pontina.
