Faul gate - Porta Faul or Porta Farnesiana is one of the most characteristic doors of Viterbo because it was opened at one of the towers of the walls in 1568. The new opening became necessary after the closure of Porta di Valle following the overflow of the Urcionio river and the consequent destruction of a part of the walls.
The project is said to have been done by the great Vignola architect who worked for the Farnese family.
For this reason the gate was originally also called Farnese gate - Porta Farnese and among its decorations we recognize the coat of arms with the lilies of the Farnese family next to that of the municipality and the papal vice legate.
Later the gate was better known as Porta Favl or Faul because it led to the Favl Valley.
The name FAVL recalls the legend of the 4 cities founded by Noah (Fanum, Arbanum, Vetulonia, Longola) from whose union Viterbo would be born.
