Viterbo. Gate of Truth or Abbot gate

Gate of Truth - Porta della Verità takes its name from the nearby Abbey of Santa Maria della Verità - St Mary of the Truth and from the use that its abbots made of it. The door is inserted in the wall circuit and its neoclassical style is enhanced by the plaster with which a section of the surrounding walls has been covered.

The door comes from the eighteenth-century accommodations during the pontificate of Pope Benedict XIII Orsini, whose coat of arms is on the door next to that of the governor of the city and municipality of Viterbo.

A large epigraph above the entrance arch tells the story of the gate.
