Viterbo. St Peter gate or Salicicchia gate

St Peter gate - Porta San Pietro is one of the oldest in Viterbo and has preserved its medieval aspect. It takes its name from the nearby Church of San Pietro founded in 1240 by Cardinal Raniero Capocci.

Next to its entrance you can admire the Abbot palace - Palazzo dell’Abate which was owned by the Cistercian monks of San Martino al Cimino and was used in the winter months. The building, which ends with a battlements, is enriched by mullioned windows in worked peperino.

The gate is also known by the name of Porta Salicicchia perhaps for the flints of the road pavement or perhaps for the nearby Castel di Salce of which today remains traces of a tower and some interesting and mysterious cave dwellings of the village.
