Viterbo. Tower of the beautiful Galliana

The tower of the beautiful Galliana is one of the medieval watchtowers inserted in the walls of Viterbo in the area in front of the Favl Valley. Its name is inspired by that of a legend about a beautiful girl named Galliana and in the center of the tower there is a small window from which she is said to have looked out for the last time.

Legend has it that during the Middle Ages, Giovanni dei Prefetti di Vico, a Roman noble from a powerful family, fell madly in love with this girl from Viterbo to the point that he decided to kidnap her.

He climbed up the wall of the girl's house, but lightning struck the bell of the Monaldesca Tower that woke the city. Giovanni was banished from the city but returned with an army and began to besiege Viterbo.

Giovanni asked to be able to see Galliana at least once and her girl looked out of the tower window, but an arrow shot by a soldier hit her in the throat and killed her.

The anger and pain of the Viterbo people was such that they drove out the besiegers and Giovanni di Vico also died in the battle.
