Alatri. Cloister of St. Francis

Alatri. Cloister of St. Francis

The cloister of St. Francis is part of a former Franciscan monastery.

It is now used for art exhibitions and conventions in Alatri.

The building dates back to the Middle Ages and the original lines are found in the vaults, in the arches, old stone pillars and in the decoration of the windows.

The convent was closed in 1873, after the fall of the Papal States and was sold in 1876 to the Town Hall who used it as a prison until 1960.

In 1996, during the final redevelopment works, in a cavity located at the entrance, was found a fresco depicting Jesus Christ in a maze and some geometric decorations. There are thought to be related to the presence of the Templars or Gnostic sects.

Today the cloister houses a collection of modern art and the Biennale of Contemporary Art. It is used as a venue for events and cultural events.
