The 'Banner of Arpino' (Gonfalone di Arpino) is the name of the Palio of the quarters and districts of Arpino, a traditional festival that takes place every year the first weekend of August.
The quarters in the race are Arco, Civita Falconara, Ponte and the districts are Collecarino, Vallone and Vignepiane.
The competition takes place over 6 races are:
The 'donkey race' where animals are ridden using only bridle and bit,
The wheelbarrow race with a wooden wheelbarrow with iron wheels on which is placed a bag of grain weighing about 40 kg.
The 'race of cannata carriers', where the cannata is a traditional earthenware pot full of water. This race is open to women who were traditionally the ones that carried water to their homes in this way.
The ‘sack race’ where athletes must move by jumping in a jute bag.
The 'relay race' where four athletes per team must be passed the baton on a path that goes along the streets of Old Town.
The 'tug of war'.
Athletes participating in the Palio wear the local traditional clothes of the Ciociaria and the ciocie footwear.
The days of the Palio are characterized by folk dancing and a parade in Ciociarian habit.
