Bolsena. Medieval Festival

Bolsena Medieval Festival is three medieval days to relive the victory of the citizens of Bolsena who did not give in to the siege of Emperor Louis IV of the Holy Roman Empire (as had been called Ludovico IV, Duke of Bavaria) and by the antipope Nicholas V.

In 1328 Ludwig IV came down from Bavaria to win the title of emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and to demonstrate his power over the pope, who was then John XXII.

Ludovico did not find much resistance and in Rome he was crowned by Cardinal Sciarra Colonna, thus giving rise to a conflict within the church that would lead to the presence of two popes at the same time on the papal throne.

Emperor and antipope began their journey back home, but the troops were hungry and began to raid the towns north of Rome coming to besiege Bolsena between 10 and 14 August.

The resistance was so strong that on 15 August the emperor left the camp and returned to Viterbo.

On these same days now a historical representation of the event is made with displays, medieval dinners in the cellars with tastings of traditional dishes and live music.
