Velletri. Camellia Festival

Velletri. Camellia Festival

In April in Velletri a festival dedicated to the Camellias and all the products and traditions that revolve around this plant and its flower. Originally from Asia, it arrived in Italy for the first time in 1786, planted inside the English garden of the Royal Palace of Caserta, and then spread throughout Italy.

The plant has found a particularly favorable habitat in Velletri due to the volcanic soil rich in minerals and to the ideal microclimate. This particular condition allows the flower, which announces the beginning of spring, to grow in most colorful shapes and colors.

Today the Camellias in Velletri have become a production of excellence and adorn the gardens of the city. Every year on the occasion of the feast producers of acidophilic produce a market exhibition during which the most beautiful private gardens are open to the public for a guided tour.

Every year there is a camellia hybrid, like the "Camelia della Misericordia" dedicated to the Jubilee.

A weekend immersed in their perfume and in many themed activities, such as photographic exhibitions, painting and much more, organized during the days of celebration to make this splendid plant better known, a boast of this small village in the province of Rome.
