Cori. Oath of the Priors

On the last Sunday of June Cori goes back in time with a historical parade of ladies and knights in sixteenth-century costumes and the palio in a race to the tight ring of the historic Carosello dei Rioni.

It all starts with the Oath of the Priors in Piazza Oliva where the priors, i.e. the governors of the three wards who in the past were responsible for the doors, swear allegiance to the door and to the municipal statute.

In the sixteenth century the priors were drawn every six months in a ceremony in the church of Sant’Oliva.

The Carosello was established in 1937 and takes place twice a year: the last Sunday in June (during the day) and the last Saturday in July (at night).

The celebrations begin in the afternoon with the parade along the streets of the town up to Piazza Signina where the ring race is held. The contenders are the knights of the three districts that correspond to the three gates: Signina, Ninfina and Romana.

The carousel originally took place on the occasion of the feast of the Madonna del Soccorso in May.
