Allumiere. District Palio (race)

Allumiere. District Palio (race)

Agostino Chigi, the founder of Allumiere, came from Siena and wanted to bring its traditions, creating in 1500 a prize in memory of the famous Palio of Siena.

The palio of Allumiere it is very similar to the original but the race is between donkeys instead of horses.

Since 1965, the tradition has been resumed enriching it with historical parades and flag-wavers.

It all starts with the blessing of the animals on Saturday and the day after, the six Allumiere districts challenge each other to a race to compete for the 'Cencio' (poor name of the Palio, a cloth drape).
