Civita Castellana. Palio of the rings

Civita Castellana. Palio of the rings

This weekend marks the celebrations of the Marciano and Giovanni, patrons of Civita Castellana, conclude with the Ottavario (traditionally octave of prayer) dedicated to historical events, plus open air competitions.

In particular, there are the competitions of the Archers with a race that takes place at the Falerii Veteris amphitheatre, a very exciting race that sees an increasing number of participants.

The most well-loved event is the Palio of the Rings with horses and riders going at full gallop to try to pierce a ring and ensure victory. The competition takes place in the moat of Forte San Gallo while the award ceremony takes place in the amphitheatre.

Sunday's religious celebrations include an afternoon mass and the procession in the Cathedral's portico where the relics are blessed.
