The second weekend of May, in Pontecorvo a festival is held in memory of the peasant Giovanni Mele called ‘Camele’. He was saved from the temptations of the devil by the intervention of Saint John.
Two life-size puppets are constructed of cardboard representing the devil and the farmer.
The two puppets parade through the streets and then are thrown into the waters of the Liri, where they are made to sink by a heavy stone-throwing.
