Tolfa Jazz is the music festival entirely dedicated to the culture of New Orleans and traditional jazz with street bands and international artists. Since 2010 it has taken place in Tolfa, in what is known as the Roman Tuscia, and the historic centre of the village turns into a stage and fills with music from early afternoon until late at night, with free concerts and events hosted in the most interesting environments.
Tolfa Jazz marries traditional culture and music with local traditions, presenting a fun and affordable event that reflects the popular nature of New Orleans music.
During the festival the various characteristics of the territory emerge, such as nature, tradition, food and wine, plus handicrafts from the Tolfetan area such as the "Catana", the typical leather bag made entirely by hand.
Artisinal craft beer is another hallmark of Tolfa Jazz and at the various stands you can taste many types of excellent craft beers. The staff welcome the public by guiding them through a journey of music, art and hops (brewed of course).
It is an experience impossible to forget: Tolfa Jazz highlights aspects related to ecology and eco-sustainability with the Picnic Musicali. These comprise a preview event of Tolfa Jazz and represent the perfect combination of jazz and the locality. There are nature walks, visits to archaeological sites, tastings of traditional local products and appealing concerts in the splendid landscapes of the Tolfa Mountains.
The Picnic Musicali offer the opportunity to visit the most important historical and natural sites of the area with excursions, accompanied by local environmental guides, on the Tolfa Mountains: ranging from the ruins of a medieval abbey to the remains of an ancient Etruscan temple, from the paths immersed in Mediterranean brush with wide green clearings used for grazing Maremma horses and cows.
During the Musicali Picnic the spaces are transformed into natural theatres where acoustic concerts take place.
The different activities of the day include a visit to a local farm, horseback riding, outdoor group games, and other events in which participants, especially children, live experiences in direct contact with animals and plants, developing greater sensitivity and respect for the environment.
Participants can taste the best food and wine products of the area including "acquacotta" (typical dish with seasonal tolfetano vegetables), meat and vegetables from local farms and wine produced by local wineries.
A full day of the festival is dedicated to women "in pink" with cultural and sporting initiatives and the exciting "Parade in Pink" where hundreds of participants, street bands and associations recreate the atmosphere of the famous "Mardi Gras" of New Orleans through music, dances and colours.
Because music also has such a therapeutic power it can help in the recovery of psycho-physical wellbeing. So this 'pink' day was born to create a new and positive cultural attitude towards breast cancer.
Tolfa Jazz was a festival conceived by Alessio Ligi and Niccolò Cellai and later embellished by the artistic direction of Maestro Marcello Rosa, who made jazz the real reason for living.
Over the last few years, at the Tolfa Jazz Festival, the artists that have performed include Nicola Tariello, Claudia Campolongo, Nicky Nicolai and Stefano Di Battista, Susanna Boots, Harold Bradley & Toto Torquati, Francesca De Fazi & Gypsy Blues Band, New Talents Jazz Orchestra, Pink Puffers Brass Band, Max Lazzarin, Simone Alessandrini Storytellers, Stephanie Ghizzoni, Andrea Tardioli & The Jazz Gang, James & Black, the dancer Marilena Ravaioli, Dom Pipkin and the Iko's, Soul Brass Band, Marco Postacchini Octet, Chris Cain & Luca Giordano Band, Joyce Elaine Yuille & Hammond Groovers and many others.
