Vallecorsa. Festival of the Four Gates

Vallecorsa. Festival of the Four Gates

The palio of Vallecorsa recalls the history in honour of Jacobella Caetani, Countess of Fondi, who lived in Vallecorsa together with her court in the first decade of the fifteenth century.

The four districts that compete for winning the "drappone" are located in four historic gates of the land:

Missore Gate, combined with the Colonna family

Porta Sant'Angelo, combined with the Zunica family

Porta De Suso, combined with the Caetani family

Porta Nova, combined with the Requesens family.

The first news of a palio in Vallecorsa is found in historical documents and in a sonnet by Gioacchino Belli.
