Minturno. Festival of Regne

The Festival of Regne (Sagra delle Regne) in Minturno is dedicated to Our Lady of Grace and takes place the second Sunday in July.

It has ancient origins. Initially the festival had non-Christian connotations and was dedicated to the gods of pagan earth so blessed crops and farm work.

In the Middle Ages it becomes religious while maintaining the importance of grain during the event.

The term comes from the Latin ‘regne gremia’, or bundles of wheat, and at the centre of the festivities the rite of "mitituri" is performed during which the wheat is beaten and distributed to those present

The festival ends with the burning of the Baronial Castle.
