Acuto. Feast of St Maurizio

Acuto. Feast of St Maurizio

On September 22, the feast of San Maurizio, patron of Acuto, is celebrated.

The feast includes a traditional procession through the streets of the town which ends with a solemn mass. During the summer holidays there are music concerts and there is a traditional antiques market.

According to legend, Maurice was a general of the Roman Empire who commanded an Egyptian-Roman legion, and who in 300 was transferred from Mesopotamia to northern Europe to fight against Christians.

Maurizio refused to fight the Christians, he was persecuted by the Emperor Diocletian and was one of the first Christian martyrs.

He became the patron saint of the Holy Roman Empire and gave rise to a chivalric order.

Today he is patron of the Alpine forces and the well known Swiss resort of St Moritz is dedicated to him.
