Maenza. Blessing of the Roses of Saint Rita

Maenza. Blessing of the Roses of Saint Rita

On May 19 Santa Rita is celebrated in Maenza with the traditional rite of the blessing of the roses.

This saint from 1400s was called the "saint of the impossible" because she realised miracles among the most needy considered impossible .

The traditional rite of roses recalls an episode in the life of the saint.

It is said that Santa Rita was in bed just before her death and asked her cousin to bring her a rose and two figs from her father's home.

The request seemed impossible because it was winter, but in the garden were blooming roses and there were the fruits.

The rose has thus become the symbol of Santa Rita.
