Gaeta. Feast of Our Lady of Porto Salvo

Gaeta. Feast of Our Lady of Porto Salvo

On the second Sunday of August in Gaeta is the celebration of Madonna di Porto Salvo, the protector of seafarers who saves people during the stormy sea bringing ships back to the port.

According to an ancient story, in 1655 during a storm, the Madonna had appeared to the ship-wrecked people and had rescued them. Since then the memory of this event is honoured every year.

The religious celebrations include a procession on the sea with the statue of the Madonna carried on a boat decked with flags and decorated, followed by other boats.

The procession arrives to Punta Stendardo where a wreath is laid in the water to honour the fallen of the sea.

The feast then continues in Porto Salvo with food and wine stands and live music.
