Montefiascone. Feast of Saint Bartholomew

On 23rd and 24th August, Montefiascone celebrate Saint Bartholomew, one of the twelve apostles.

Saint Bartholomew a missionary who spent his life spreading Christianity in the Middle East and in Syria where he probably died skinned alive.

In fact, Michelangelo portrays him in the Sistine Chapel with his skin in his hand and, on his skin, drawing his own self-portrait.

As well as the religious ceremony, this day is an opportunity for the fair of baskets that was very important in the past because on this occasion the people bought the baskets that would be used for the grape and the olive harvest.

The gastronomic discovery of these days is the festival of aniseed donut, one of the traditional sweets of the Roman countryside and of Tuscia.
